Best Beaches of Catalonia and Spain

beach

Barcelona is known for its palmed lined beaches and tropical feel but it can be hard to grasp onto a feeling of escape when scouring the beach for an open spot some thirty feet from the water.

There is nothing like walking along the coastline of Barceloneta, Bogatell, or Nova Icaria with their beachside bars, lounges and restaurants, however just a little way up the coast are mini escapes to local small towns with wide open beaches and lots to do. Catalonia has tons of hidden gems for beaches where you can take your mind off being a tourist and relax.

Sitges:

One major town a short train ride away from Barcelona is that of Sitges. Its micro-climate makes for enjoying outdoor activities and sports almost every day of the year including beach rugby, sailing regattas, futbol, and running events.

It is backed by the Garraf Mountains making it perfect for nature lover and they have numerous festivals and cultural events throughout the year making it very family friendly. Sitges is perfect for a day trip outside of the crowds of beautiful Barcelona.

 Garraf:

Right off the 30 minute train ride to El Garraf are stairs leading to the beach in this quiet little town. The town is located inside of a bay and sits above the warm water on the rocks. On the main beach they even have small beach huts you can rent. El Garraf is a perfect beach for kids and families and even has some local restaurants to enjoy along the water.

Costa Brava:

Costa Brava is a stretch of coastline going from Blanes to the French border that includes the countryside province of Girona. Whether you want to enjoy the castle ruins of Girona or the sunny beaches of the coast, Costa Brava is absolutely a must for a weekend or day trip.

Its charming small towns lined with mountains, restaurants and shops will make you never want to leave. There is always something to do whether it’s water sports, relaxing on the beach, or taking in the sights of an old town.

  • If one is trying to discover the coast of Costa Brava, there is a footpath that connects beaches, resturants, and resorts. Along the route youll find many coves, beautiful views, and very few people.

Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca:

If you are looking to travel a little more outside of the mainland of Spain there are plenty of islands for any type of getaway you are planning on your trip to Spain. If you are looking for parties on beautiful beaches, bars with great drinks, and music that plays until the sun comes up then Ibiza is the destination for you. As one of the party capitals of the world, the island of Ibiza is perfect for a trip with friends. If you are feeling something a little more toned down then you have the beautiful islands of Mallorca and Menorca a short flight away.

These islands make for a great “island hopping” trip and offer plenty of activities for whoever you are travelling with. Whether you enjoy eating out, staying out late and listening to music, or doing water sports and inland activities, Barcelona and the areas surrounding this beautiful city offer something for everyone. Feeling like a local can be hard to do on a week-long vacation, especially when you feel the need to cram all the activities into that one trip.

Taking a day or two out of the touristy activities to visit one of these relaxing spots can ease that mindset create a fulfilled vacation.
